Agapanthus - Where to start

I have decided to ditch the dahlias from the garden, had the worst season ever and have given in to the bugs and beasties that love them. So decided blue and white themed agapanthus are for me. I am finding it a bit confusing deciding how to go about it. Should I buy plants now, should I buy roots later, should I buy plugs in Spring. They are going in containers in the border, not sure whether that makes a difference. Advice would be lovely thanks.

I would buy them as plants, you might find some bargains at the garden centre when they have gone over in a few weeks. Alternatively bare root in spring, Wilkos and garden centres stock them, I would prefer to buy in person rather than online having received poor quality roots in the past.
