    It’s a Shield Bug.

I'm going to go with Cabbage Bug but it's not one I'm very familiar with  https://www.britishbugs.org.uk/heteroptera/Pentatomidae/eurydema_oleracea.html

Image looks close. Found in central England, but not usually this far north.
    Thank-you kindly.

Very difficult to get a picture of it. Gone now, but it was probably a little more black and white than the picture.
Definitely not that one Lyn. We are a long, long way from where that one has been seen.

Definitely looks like a nymph of some shield bug, not an imago (adult).
Doesn't look at all like a ladybird IMHO. ;)

When I said ladybird like I meant in shape. ie rounded rather than either shield shaped or with a long snout as in a weevil

This chart is very helpful https://www.britishbugs.org.uk/heteroptera/idcards/life_stages.html You have to pay close attention to the fine details though. Yours is a 4th instar going by the partial wing formation. They have an annoying habit of changing colour soon after moulting though so you're never sure if it's one species or just a freshly moulted nymph of another.
