Do you mean that you planted seed potatoes? They're like wrinkly potatoes. When did you plant them and where?
    In London. Keen but lazy.

If seed potatoes have been planted and they are not growing at all it is likely they have rotted off in all the wet weather we have been having.  Where in the UK are you?  Did you buy seed potatoes from a reputable supplier or use ones from the supermarket?
  • Did you chit?
  • How long ago did you plant them? I planted some a few weeks ago and the leaves have only now broken the surface.

    Hi,

Let's go through some common issues and their possible solutions:

    1. Soil Quality: The soil is the foundation for healthy plant growth. If the soil lacks essential nutrients or is too compacted, it can hinder the development of your potato plants. Consider testing the soil's pH and nutrients levels. If it's deficient, enrich it with organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure.

    2. Sunlight: Potatoes thrive in full sunlight. If your garden doesn't receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day, it might be the reason for slow growth or no growth. Relocate your potato patch to a sunnier spot if possible.

    3. Watering: Overwatering or underwatering can cause issues. Potatoes require consistent moisture, but not waterlogged conditions. Make sure to water them deeply, but allow the soil to drain adequately between watering sessions.

    4. Planting Depth: If you planted the seeds too deep, it can delay or prevent the sprouting process. Generally, potatoes should be planted about 4 inches deep. If you've planted them deeper, gently unearth the seeds to the correct depth.

    5. Temperature: Potatoes prefer cool temperatures. If it's too hot, the plants might not grow well. However, if the temperature drops below freezing, it can damage the young plants. Keep an eye on the weather conditions and protect the plants accordingly.

    6. Pests and Diseases: Check for any signs of pests or diseases. Common pests like potato beetles and diseases like blight can wreak havoc on your plants. Act promptly to control any infestations or infections.

    7. Seed Quality: Sometimes, the issue lies with the quality of the potato seeds you used. Ensure that you source your seeds from a reputable supplier.

    8. Patience: Lastly, gardening requires patience. Sometimes, it takes a bit longer for seeds to germinate and establish. Keep providing proper care and give your potato plants some time to catch up.

I hope these tips help you figure out what might have gone wrong. Remember, gardening is a learning experience, and we all encounter challenges along the way. Don't get discouraged; try making the necessary adjustments, and hopefully, your potato plants will start thriving soon! If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask. Happy gardening!

I too am confused @Fairygirl … given that in his post on 28 January this year  @jimmids described himself as a novice he certainly seems to be a very quick learner. 😉
