Garlic

What could be the reason for very small garlic bulbs this year? Planted as usual in Sept.

    I would be interested too. I had a mixture of perfectly reasonable and tiny bulbs (my first year growing it).

    Ours were small last year which I'm sure was due to them being too close together. This years crop (x52) were planted Nov22 and are 90% a very decent size - grown in Yorkshire...
    Yorkshire, ex Italy and North East coast. Growing too old for it!
  • Mine were very small too, but perfectly formed. I put it down to nearly two months with no useful rain in the spring.

    I’ve not grown any this year (family stuff) but my instinct is that @Forester_Pete has hit the nail on the head … lack of rain when the bulbs should’ve been swelling. 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    That would tie in as we watered ours during the dry spells...
    Yorkshire, ex Italy and North East coast. Growing too old for it!
