Creating a Hydrangea Grandiflora Standard

Hi all,

I'd like to turn this young hydrangea into a standard. I have selected an upright stem and staked it. My question is: Should I remove the other stems now, or wait until winter?

Not something I would do with that type,  the flowers are heavy and the stems are weak, But by all means have a go,  you won’t know if you don’t try.

I agree - not really the best type for doing that with. Mopheads are probably the best type.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Okay thank you, maybe I'll let it grow naturally :)

I don’t want to be negative, but I agree with others, that type of Hydrangea has blooms that are heavy for the stems, so it is really unlikely to work, you will just end up spoiling a good plant.
How can you lie there and think of England
