Quick question about Hellebores

Odd time of year to be asking I know, but it's relevant!

What do they look like in summer please? I've never had any before.

I've made a space in a border, and I'd like to create year round interest.  There's a dwarf Apple tree nearby for spring blossom, and a Hydrangea. It's a dampish space and gets afternoon sun in summer, but little in winter.

I'm thinking I'd like to plant Astilbe to the back, with Hellebore in the front, so flowers for lots of the year. But I don't know if an astilbe/Hellebore combo will look okay or what Hellebore look like in summer, and I can't find a photo on Google.

Can anyone show me please?

I think Astilbe like it a lot wetter in the summer than hellebores.
  • Ours look like this.

They can really vary. Some look awful in summer (pots that get a strong morning sun), some look like the 1st pic above (borders that get strongish on sun) and some look like 2nd pic above (nth facing, little sun in pots). So I don’t think they love any strong sun imo, but my pots suffer at times from lack of watering, so perhaps this doesn’t help!

I love them in winter - such a joy on dark days.

They are a big group - so check what kind of hellebore you have. Corsican hellebores (Helleborus argutifolius) are fine in full sun.
