Jasmine and deer

dianar.hdianar.h Posts: 3
I live in the New Forest and we are surrounded by deer.  Several roe deer live in my garden year round which, since I have put a trellis round space to make a courtyard and filled it with potted plants, have have left my plants alone (because they can no longer get near their favourites like my roses etc) and I have learned how to live happily with them in the rest of my garden.  One thing I have found which is not mentioned on any website about deer is a jasmine called Potato Vine.  They don't seem to touch it and as it's a beautiful and fast growing bush with blue flowers (and lovely) we have started trying to turn former herbaceous borders into a jasmine jungle with anything else we have poking out of the middle.  This includes the pretty salvia with red and white flowers. catmint, lavender, lavatera bushes and anything else that Gardeners World suggest is worth a try.  They aren't supposed to like Star Jasmine either, but when I found them head first eating it was when I had a trellis round courtyard constructed.   Hope this is of interest to someone!

Hope this interests someone with deer problems.  Have to stresss, though, we seem to be confined to roes.  I don't think fallows would ignore.

They seem to know when something is poisonous so I suppose that’s why they leave it alone.

Potato vine is not a jasmine, it is Solanum jasminoides, relate to potatoes and quite a few poisonous plants.  Thats probably why they leave it.

Thank you so much, both of you.  That explains a lot!   Hope I am going to continue to be successful with replacing other plants with it and still have something pretty to look at!

Jasmine and deer is one of Yankee Candle's least popular flavours.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
