Salvia propogation

Hello :) Does anyone have any tips on how to propagate salvia Dysons Maroon and Salvia Caradona from cuttings? I am having no luck. Other salvia varieties take ridiculously easily, but these two.. nothing. Too many failed attempts. Tried south facing window, north facing, with cover, without cover, outside…

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried in water? That's how I've always done Salvias. Never tried herbaceous species like Caradonna though, I think I would rather divide them or remove rooted side shoots in spring.

I've just potted up some S. 'Caradonna' cuttings that were started in water, but it took TWO MONTHS before roots started to form. I nearly gave up many times (I'm used to Salvia cuttings taking about a week to start!) but sheer laziness meant I left them. So - wait.

I agree, the herbaceous salvias are better divided, just as they start growing in spring. I've had no problem striking cuttings of Dyson's Maroon in the same way as the other shrubby salvias - semi-ripe cuttings of non-flowering shoots (or nip off the flower spike and any new buds that appear) around the edge of a small pot of gritty compost, with a plastic bag over, on my east-facing spare bedroom windowsill. Knock the moisture off the inside of the bag every day and take it off when they've rooted.

    Everyone, thank you so much.

@Loxley, all I have tried is water. You’re right about the dividing Caradona.

@LG Thankyou for the tip. I’m going to just leave the Caradona now and see what happens When algae starts growing in the jar, do you swap jars or just leave it?

@JennyJ thank you for the description. Hadn’t used soil. Maybe that’s what it’s going to take for Dysons Maroon.

    Thanks everyone! :)
