What to use to replace an established conniver hedge

Hello!

I have a roughly 8 foot tall conifer hedge between my house and the main road. It's starting to show it's age, thinning and browning in a few places. I'd love to keep a hedge of equal size between me and the road for both privacy and noise reduction.

Obviously I'll need to remove the entire hedge first, but what can I replace it with that will hopefully grow quickly enough to give the same privacy in a few years (aside from another conifer!)

Yew  will grow fairly fast once established, and can be pruned hard and will regrow out of the stems, unlike most conifers.

Ilex [holly] is also good, although it can take a while to get to good height, and Laurel is often used as it's fairly fast growing, but it can get very very big and wide so it would depend on what space you have. Portuguese laurel is better behaved, and can be kept neater and narrower than the cherry laurels.
Good old Privet is also fast growing, but isn't strictly evergreen. In milder, wetter areas it does very well. It will still keep a good density unless you're somewhere very very cold for long periods.
If you can get the existing hedge out and the area really well prepped [it'll need that after having conifers] then you can order bare root hedging for autumn planting. That's a much more economical way, and you can buy smaller specimens to plant a bit more densely. They'll establish more easily than big ones, and will then grow and get to a better size quickly.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
