compost

Hi , this is my first attempt to produce compost - it is a square 500litre  bin with lid and sits on soil.  It just keeps disappearing no matter how much is put in , I try to even out browns and greens , what is happening ? any advice welcome, regards

It does shrink down very quickly when it's rotting down.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

It takes loads and you get very little for your efforts . You have to be very disciplined and put everything you can in and probably need more than one compost container.

Intentionally for each year's runner bean pit, I put all our kitchen bin contents in a 200 litre plastic bin, which is 90% full by the time each March comes round.  It's part of the theory, in this instance, of 'Fail to prepare, prepare to fail' and always works.

yes I acquired an allotment last winter and started the compost bin off at some point last winter  - but had to rely mainly on kitchen waste as the allotment was mainly
piled high with rubbish rather than plants , all of the kitchen waste ( well uncooked veg peelings) has gone in the compost since then  but clearly still not enough!
