Potting on an acer seedling

When I repot my acer seedling, should I go with a tall pot - the kind roses come in or a wide shallower pot.  Just potting on. Not it's permanent home.
In London. Keen but lazy.

I do first repot at about 2 true leaves.  I use ca 7 cm square pots.  Seems to work for me.

Anything that accommodates the root system, without being too much bigger in any direction, is ideal. An inch or so every way.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

It has several true leaves and it looks like it will be a nice shape.
The reason I asked is, do the roots want to go down deep or spread out sideways?

Both in my experience, but you don't want masses of soil around them too soon, so that the roots aren't at risk of rotting. Less of a problem at this time of year, but it's autumn and winter that they're more at risk, especially as there's nothing to stop the rain getting through the canopy.
I just keep potting them on until they're suitable for planting out, if I intend doing that, but I like them in pots too, so that I can move them around.  :)

I'll put it in an ordinary pot when the time comes, then. Thank you @Fairygirl

If you like bonsai, then probably a shallow pot.
