Yellowing lavender

I brought this lavender in summer 2020 and it has thrived in the flowerbed i put it in. But last summer it started to go yellow, I cut it back and it regrew green leaves. This year in May (see photo) it was flowering and looked green, but went yellow again, so as soon as finished 1st flowers I cut it back. New growth looks green. But why did it go yellow and not thriving?  The bed is in full sun, I think drains fine, I don't fertilise the bed (I've probably added compost from compost heap at some point but not much) and I don't water the bed except in drought (& by hand so not much). As mentioned thrived in the same bed, nothing has changed & all the usual causes don't seem to fit. Help!

Bit difficult to tell from the photo but it does look a bit crowded.  They can grow to large bushes and quite often, if they are in a restricted planting area, they will benefit from pruning after the flower spikes have finished to keep them to a suitable size for the root ball.
