Young clematis dying😔

Hi - we planted this Taiga clematis against the trellis and it began growing well and had stunning blooms (12-15!). Now it has suddenly begun drying up - a friend says we have over watered it . Please advise as to how I can resurrect this young plant

When did you plant it, how big was it - as in what size of pot and what age was the plant before you got it, and what prep did you do? Was it  from a reputable source? All these things are important factors, but the prep is probably the most important    :)

They need good soil, water and suitable drainage, and food. Being so close to that post and a fence/wall, will mean footings and drier conditions which can be really detrimental.

  • If it was me, I would cut it right back and see if it perks up again.  They are very greedy plants so it may want a feed?  Also, if you planted it deep enough, it may well put up some new stems from the base.  Beautiful colour!!  Fingers crossed all will be well.
  • Fairy girl :  I bought it as a plug last year, had it in a pot until Apr/May this year. I planted it once the trellis was ready. Do I water it everyday ? Someone said I may have over watered if
  • Thank you ladybird . I’ve been reading up on this subject and understand that Clematises like their roots in shade and head in sun! So shall try to plant something by the root🤞🤞

The roots in shade heads in sun is just a myth. Most clematis [not all] need a damp cool root run, but they don't necessarily need sun. Many are more than happy in shade.  :)
If you bought it as a plug last year then it's still a very, very young immature plant and would have benefited from growing on for a bit longer.
It certainly shouldn't be watered every day - that encourages the roots to stay near the surface which is the opposite of what's needed. Water thoroughly when you water - a canful, and do that every three or four days.
It's how you've planted it that's important, and what the prep and the soil are like that matter. How did you prep the soil it's in? How near the fence/wall/trellis is it? If it doesn't have adequate room, that will compromise it's growth too, and those want to be big plants.
It would be better cut back a bit just now, which will reduce stress, and will hopefully produce more stems as already said. They take several years from being young plants to being mature and full sized  :)

  • Thank you - it was planted by a gardener who helped me put up trellis so I’m sure he did the right thing that way. I’ve cut it back down to the root and shall follow your watering advice once it grows back🤞thanks a ton
