Budget friendly substrate for paths

I’m looking for suggestions for a substrate for garden paths through a wildish section of my wildlife garden. Nothing formal I just want to run paths through some larger blocks. Budget is very limited

I have used bark to create a path for weeding beds on either side.  It needs topping up once a year but is inexpensive and easy.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

Bark is good but breaks down over time (which for me is a good thing as it is incorporated into the soil), so it's worth pricing up a membrane and slate or stone/gravel, which might work out cheaper after a few years.
If you have local tree surgeons (proper ones, not just someone with a van and a chainsaw) then it's worth giving them a call as they can sometimes offer it for free or a small delivery charge. They donate it to our local allotments but have also took loads to people's houses when they asked nicely.
  • I’ve got a small section of old red brick which needs widening so was thinking if I could get some from somewhere but it’s a faf to move
