Planting out dryopteris

B3B3 Posts: 27,505
I have some dryopteris ready to plant out. It will be dry light shade clay. I have one already planted in the bed for a couple of years so I know they will be OK.
When would be a good time to plant them out? I'm happy to wait until next year if that's best.

I’m no expert @B3 but two weeks ago I made a stumpery and planted out various ferns including dryopteris and they have already grown a bit and seem to be doing well. The area I’ve planted mine in is very dry shade on clay soil so I’m making sure I water them well for the first year until they’re established and hopefully all will be well 😁

They are tough plants. We had to move a huge one in the recent hot weather to rebuild a retaining wall. I watered it well, but it still drooped a lot. Now with much cooler weather and plenty of rain it is growing back happily. Yours should be fine just moving from a pot. :)

I agree - they should be fine just stuck in the ground any time.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
