Slug prevention

KT53KT53 Posts: 9,016
I was watching Beechgrove this morning and they mentioned a limited test they did of slug prevention measures.  Of the three options they used, coffee grounds were most effective closely followed by garlic spray.  Both required reapplication after rain, so a good supply would be needed this year.  Grit was by far the least effective.  Host plant was delphinium.  The test was cut short when 'pesky wabbits' got in and ate all the plants.

Yeh- I saw it the other night. The problem is - in wet areas -and they aren't in as wet an area as most places in the west [despite the weather earlier this year ] you'd never be doing anything else but re applying stuff.

I note they didn't try nematodes or ferric phosphate pellets which are not harmful to hedgehogs or birds, pets, children.....

@Obelixx I'm guessing they were looking at options which are either free or very cheap.
