Lemon Tree Very Pretty but ..........

tui34tui34 Posts: 3,493
Not just for @Nanny Beach but anyone who can answer my question is welcome to.

And the question is:  Can I prune now?

The left side of my well-established lemon tree is lopping along nicely.  I had a really good crop this year which finished around April/May.

On the other hand, the right side of the tree is very stressed.  I'd like to prune away the dead wood down to the healthy branches now.  There are small lemons forming on the left side but on the stressed side the tiny lemons have gone black and of course I can just pop them off with my finger.   Would it be ok to prune the right side now being a very hot summer.   It gets fed regularly with citrus feed and watered every second day.  (Dry here)

Thank you for your comments.

It hurt me more than it hurt the tree @Nanny Beach  Plenty of green wood though.  We'll see how it fares early winter.  If I remember, I'll send an update photo.

Try giving it a high nitrogen feed or two to encourage new foliage.

Thank you @Obelixx   I am using Agroflash Agrumes - the tree has quite a bit of growth on it.  It'll come away eventually.  It's been through the school of hard knocks having been completely destroyed by snow one year and hit by a severe frost another year.  It pops back stronger than ever!!

@Dovefromabove   The reason for the title.  Yes, I do know that song.  Didn't The Seekers sing it back in the day.?Judith Durham I think.  Great song.

I think a lot of people recorded it back then … Harry Belafonte certainly did.
