It's really infuriating, isn't it @Alfie_? I took a photo recently of the one that's been really struggling, and it's surprising how well it's recovered. This was how it looked a few weeks ago....
Not got a new pic, but I'll take one tomorrow. It even has a few buds. Perhaps it's worth trying that 'water tray' idea if you have something suitable. It's not pretty, but once they recover you can take them out of it again. This one is hidden behind some other plants so that helps. I don't really see it unless I go along the path at the back of it, although I can see the edge of the tray from my bedroom window. The sparrows have been enjoying using it as a bath though!
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I just went and took one - not brilliant, but you can see the difference in the foliage at the top, from the ropey stuff lower down. Bud at the top, although it's not too clear.

It's a pain having to do it @Alfie_ , but it works well - as long as there aren't any slugs already in the soil in the pot! It's the only way I can reliably grow lettuce outside too, and there's a small pot of it in that tray as well. If I can overwinter that dahlia successfully, I'll label it so that I can start it off in that way next year to give it a head start.

I really do detest them and they are just so disgusting as well.
