Manure

Hello all, my father was wondering if there is anything wrong with his manure. He said it is well rotted and was wondering why he has not got and weeds, gras or hay growing out of it. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Maybe the temperature during rotting got high enough to kill weed/grass seeds, or maybe the animals it came from had been fed on something without seeds in it. Or maybe the seeds are just taking their time to germinate.

My manure never had weeds as it came from a mature, very hot, midden where I worked.  :)

In many years of experience with muck heaps the first weeds to move in are always nettles!

There have been cases of manure that has been contaminated with weedkiller. https://www.rhs.org.uk/soil-composts-mulches/weedkiller-in-manure I'm not saying that could be the case here but the lack of weed growth might point to this.

Don’t get weeds in ours either,  there are a few tiny nettles seeds appearing in my pots of red peppers but nothing else and they were planted in that compost back in May.
