Help with new clematis

I bought a Dr Ruppel yesterday, it's a group 2.
It has two stems coming from the base, one about a foot long, and the other around 6ft. The 6ft one splits into two around half way up, and at the end of each is a flower.
Rhs advice is that newly planted group 2s should be pruned back hard the following spring to promote new stems growing from the base.
But as its currently so leggy (and looks a bit silly really) I'm wondering whether it would be worth pruning the 6ft stem back to about a foot now, to encourage it to bush out a little as it's only July and there's time for it to grow some more, or whether I should leave it until spring?
Either way I'll wait until the flowers are done. But I'd like to give it the best chance of being healthy and full.
