    Juniper trees and hedges.

    Two-tied hedges.
    Trees used include azaleas, abelias, boxwoods, hollyhocks.
    Also okamezasa and kokumazasa (which I think are a type of bamboo) and enkianthus perulatus.

    I think it says three-tiers. Some of the same plants I’ve mentioned before.

    I really liked this one too. I see the rounded azaleas all over the place, but this low, flat hedge is really something. I think the author says, similarly to you, that ‘when you sit in the room, you can see the expanse of the garden in the background [framed by the hedge].’

    Visiting Japan is definitely on my wish list...  doubt if I'll make it in this life though!

    Middle picture says that ‘Kiso Stone’ has been used.

    Here the author is saying the top photo is a good example, but the bottom one shows poor construction technique.
