Juglans ailantifolia Cordiformis (Japanese walnut) brown leaves

Goodday!
In Februari 2023 I planted this Walnut in a sunny site in ground with pH 7. The planting hole was enriched with compost. Tree size ca 1m. Supported by canes.
The first leaves appeared on May 7, but they turned brown. Subsequent ones too.
March was cold here, on Dutch North Sea island Texel, (-5C) with strong northerly winds and snow. Early summer was very dry, the tree was watered regularly, and we had some very warm days in July.
Am I unpatient and should I wait till next year to see if the tree improves? Was it the weather or could there be something else wrong?
Thank you!
