Tayberry

It's my first proper year of having a crop, there are plenty, but they are rock solid. Is this usual for this time of year or should they be ripe by now. I don't know what variety they are, I bought the plant from the range. Any help on how I should be caring for them would be great. I'm just watering them daily and mulched them in the spring. Thanks in advance for any help

We are growing them for the first time. All of our berries look exactly like your first photo, small and nowhere near ripe. Perhaps a more seasoned grower of them will let us know you typically crop them.
  • Let's hope we both have a bumper crop and they are sweet to taste!
  • They just need longer. Wait until they are soft and look like a big dark raspberry. Mine are ready in the south, but depends where you are. They should just come off in your fingers like a raspberry when they are ripe.

We've been picking them for a couple of weeks. I'm in the south. But mine looked like yours before they ripened
  • I'm in Yorkshire so I'll just have to be patient

Far too early here - a good few weeks for them yet. You'll have a nice crop once they're ready  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

They aren't ready here in norwich yet either but we didn't get the warm weather the west got earlier on. For us the logan berries are first (now fruiting), followed by the tayberries and the blackberries last, which are setting fruit at the moment but go on for much longer.
