  For added context, the plant is probably 10-15 yrs old

  My feeling is that it’s come to its natural end. They’re not long lived shrubs and once they get woody in the centre they’re prone to splitting. 

  
  

  It’s good practice to take done cuttings every year or so and grow them on, then you’re ready armed with a replacement. However we don’t always have the time, energy or space to follow all good practice … so Id dig it out and purchase a replacement.

  I'm definitely not one for good practice, or rather, I haven't been. Trying to learn!  I had thought that might be the general conclusion. I can't even see a way of cutting it back and making it look nice.

  Could you take cuttings from it? Then it’s not a complete loss.

  Don't see why not, if now is the season to do it? It will help my sentimentality! Now the fun / hard task of deciding what to replace it with !

  I did think a lavender, but.im keen to get something that will last a long time. Possibly a rose or a rambler to run over the wall and the fence.

  @nickoslester93f3fKIn Hidcote started an experiment last year by cutting down some of their lavender tremendously. After it regrew, they cut all lavender in April. Their lavender started to regrow again like new plants.  I took pictures of the stages.
