Sweet apples - which variety?

We want to plant a couple of apple trees this autumn and would like a sweet variety, about 3m tall (max 4m). I was looking at Gala apples but it seems that the trees are prone to scab. Does anyone have any recommendations for apples similar to Gala or failing that, the sweetest apples they have come across?
Thank you.

A friend and gardener by trade up the road has many apple trees at both his properties.
    His favourite is Scrumptious.
He's mentioned it to some of his customers and I've heard very positive feedback from them.
I planted one last Nov - it has 3-4 apples on it atm and looks a healthy tree, but I've not tasted one yet. I'm growing it as a vertical cordon.
I also planted a Hereford Russet.
Many years ago I had an Egremont Russet and the sweetness and flavour was outstanding. It does have a thick skin though like most Russets. The Hereford variety is supposedly an improvement.

The eventual size of your tree is controlled by the rootstock  -see here-

So you'd probably want an M26

Katya early and Spartan later. Great in our small orchard.

I'd second Katya (sometimes sold as Katy) as an early, sweet apple, loved by children.  It doesn't keep in storage though.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
  • Thank you, all. Some very interesting suggestions here to look into - I've never heard of any of these before.

Royal Gala if you live in warmer part of the UK.
I wish I could garden all year round!
