It looks like a dock weed to me? I know what you are thinking JKW.

I think it's a Persicaria of some sort, but they are in the same family as JKW and can be fairly thuggish as well. If you get a flower that should help with ID one way or the other, just keep a watchful eye in case more start to appear or  it grows taller. Have you looked over the wall to see what's on the other side?

I agree, it is a Persicaria, but not the dreaded JKW.
How can you lie there and think of England

@Dormouse1940 That is good advice to look over the wall. Do you have just the one or is there more than one to the right of the photo.

  • OK, phew I think- thanks everyone.

Over the wall our neighbours HATE nature of any kind so it's all heavily concreted and plastic grass that side.

It looks like we just have the one plant so far, getting a bit lanky now- it sneakily hid itself amongst a buddleia and a nettle so I didn't spot it when it was smaller

@Dormouse1940 I suppose the puzzle is where has it come from I don't think they readily set seed?

If you look at Persicaria bistorta on line does that ring any bells? There are alot of different Persicarias but that one is more commonly grown. In leaf and without flowers it can be mistaken for the weed and is in the dock family.

@nutcutlet I see what you mean, it is the new growth at the top.
