Carrots again

CollareddoveCollareddove Posts: 173
I continue to try with carrots, but three separate sowing have produced  very meagre germination.  I am inclined to make one decent row out of the three - does anyone have experience of transplanting carrots?  If it is possible, at what stage of carrot development should it be done?

  • I think you would risk the dreaded carrot fly. Disturbing the soil around carrots attracts them I believe, unless they are at least 18 inches above the ground as they don’t fly very high …

We gave up sowing outdoors as we had nil germination.
We have a polytunnel so some years ago we tried sowing carrots in it.
    Brilliant harvest.
We have continued to do this moving the areas for the sowing.

If you sow outside I find fleecing or cloche them until they are a few inches tall helps. I use the variety Speedo and they manage the weather variations better than some @Collareddove
