Butternut squashes in pots

Hey fruit and veg growers.

my husbands boss has kindly given me two butternut squash plants. I am looking at moving house soon so don't want to plant them in the ground as then I would need to either dig them ip or leave them.

how big of a pot do people recommend for me to grow them in? I know they are thirsty plants so will need to water them but I'm hoping a ‘normal’ size pot will do.

It'll depend on the variety. I've grown one of the small types in a container - probably around 18 inches by about 12, and about 12 in depth/height. Just a plastic storage box.

They do need lots of water and decent soil to do well. A good support too.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I have no idea on the type… i thought all butternut squashes were the same to be honest 🙈.

i have a pot bigger than that so i’ll put them in that for now.

She grows hers across the ground without supports but i have a couple of obelisks going spare so i’ll use them i think. Thanks @Fairygirl

Yes- if you have room you can let them sprawl, but in a pot they need some help.  I usually just use branches from pruning shrubs etc. They're fine for squash and pumpkin etc, and I use them for courgettes too   :)

  • Im hoping once i move i have some space away from the main garden (and away from the cat and dogs) to start growing veg in the ground and get a little veg patch going. His boss is just an all round good egg and got me started a little early, not that I'm complaining as ill be able to have some lovely butternuts this year
