Ilex shrub dying

Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions about why this mature ( over 20 years old ) Ilex ( of some type ? ) might be shedding leaves and dying.
Only clues I have are
Some evidence of a grey flaky material on some branches
Lots of ivy growing around the base
There is the remains of the stump of an old sycamore tree which was cut down about 7 years ago possibly within reach of the roots
Also close by a mature rhododendron shrub died with shriveled up leaves earlier this year
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

@kgee20 Hollies can suffer from blight causing leaf drop. You have the added problem of competition from the roots of other plants competing for water. Hollies do naturally drop leaves especially in spring. Any shrub under stress can suffer from a number of pests and diseases.
