Container inside a container. Would it work?

B3B3 Posts: 27,505
I planted a single thunbergia in a large container. It is doing really well but I suspect that I could get an even bigger plant in a larger container.
What if I put some compost in the bottom of a larger container and plonked the smaller container in on top of it? Would the roots find their way out of the bottom of the container into the fresh compost?

Why wouldn't you just pot it on in the normal way though?

Isn't this just a root-choking teabag on a grander scale?

Because it's been trained at all angles up the fence and I'm likely to cause damage to the plant. If it's not practical, I'll leave it and stoop being greedy! @Fairygirl

    Ah - bit trickier then.
Nothing to stop you trying it. Having a bit more root room can make a difference if the pot isn't big enough. I've done it with tomatoes in the past by putting pots into a seed tray of compost when they were already getting too big [on a conservatory windowsill] and it wasn't viable to get them into bigger containers for similar reasons to yours.  :)

I like the seed tray idea too. Thank you @Fairygirl
That occurred to me @WAMS 😉

A basin would possibly be better if you had one.

I have a big green one that used to be a pondlet! How did you know?

Maybe knock the bottom out of the small container if it's not too precious.

I think that might be tricky @plant pauper when there's a growing plant in it.
Yes - anything that has some depth and width to it will work @B3 :)

I have an old basin too. I've been thinking that I don't want to punch drainage holes in the green job.
