Help with clematis sudden problem

Hello,

would appreciate some advice about my clematis. It's been growing well and then suddenly started turning yellow and brown on the bottom older growth. Any ideas what's wrong?

Sorry the pics are showing sideways for some reason.

Thank you.

It's just the old growth. Old stuff dies, drops off, and the new stuff replaces it.
Unless there's a problem somewhere affecting the entire plant, it won't be a problem. The other thing that can happen is just damage from birds or other wildlife - slugs eating through stems, although that tends to be on newer wood.  :)
If it's an armandii, which is what it looks like, it'll need a bigger support unless it has a building of some kind to grow over - a shed or similar.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Is it in the groud or a pot?
    Southampton
  • It's in the ground, and it grows up and over a porch. All the new growth seems happy, it's the lower part that's not. It's about 3 or 4 years old.
  • I should add, the yellowing happened quite suddenly over the last few days
