What's this plant

Hi,

My friend has just bought a house, so i went round to help her ID the plants in her garden. I'm not sure about this one. At first from a distance i thought a sycamore tree, but it isn't. It's got no hand stems all soft new growth. Leaves are as big as my hand.  We are in south dorset and sandy soil if that helps.
Any ideas what it might be. The garden is full of shrubs and fruit trees.

Looks like Japanese anemone to me.

Yes Japanese Anemone. The White ones are well worth growing. The pinks such as Queen Charlotte can go under the garden wall and into the garden next door.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
  • Thanks I new I recognised the leaves. We have some at work. Thanks we will look to see what colour they are.

We had the white one many years ago from a friend in the village. Did well for some years and then as so often happens in our garden, just disappeared. Never seen again.

I only grow the whites - great for shady places.
Have you got drier soil @bertrand-mabel? They definitely need consistent moisture more than the pink ones.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I have a pink one: September Charm.

Gets sun for about an hour on a morning in summer.

    Hasn’t spread far….yet

@Fairygirl we are in clay soil...so not dry apart from when we have weather like this. But when they disappeared we had "normal" British weather (if that makes sense)
