Is this pear tree dying already?

If you look carefully at the second picture below, you can see what I think is a new leaf growing, but the way all the existing leafs are curling up, I'm concerned it might be on the way out already, especially since it was a cheap deal from B&Q (it was very leafy when purchased). 

It gets watered every two to three days. 

Or am I overthinking things and this being part of the natural shedding cycle?

    How much water are you giving it each time?

    What’s the soil like and how was the planting site prepared?

    Is there a circle of a metre clear of grass/plants around the base of the tree. 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    I fill up a watering bucket and give it all of the water out of the watering bucket.

    The soil is clay like. I simply dug a hole big enough for it to fit and planted it.

    Yes, there is a metre clear.
