  • How do I know? that's why I asked for advice. And it has been good trying to find out about it. I don't think Monty Don would have given any better comments and advice. SO I have decided to keep it as it is, take off some of the hundreds of seeds, try to bring them on and see if they germinate. I will try different plantings in compost, soil, and anything else I can think of. I did manage to take off the brokeen stems which fell in the  in the wind. My goodness they are strong! about 2 inches thick and pure white and woody inside. It did need a strong pair of cutters. Stems are hollw inside so I covered them with tape in case rain got in and rotted it. Thankfully 1 big stem survived so, I am leaving the whole plant to do its own thing now. Then, I will see what happens next year Whether it will be a feast or a funeral I can't depict, BUT I will post to let you all know of the fate of the FENNEL!!  Thank you all so much for your comments, and Happy Gardening to you all.

    Can you eat it?

The usual recommendation is not to as it can be toxic.

Hazel, this link below suggests that, if the stems are cut before the plant sets seed, then the whole plant will not die back. Perhaps worth trying.

I have normal perennial fennel and it's 8ft tall at the moment but it doesn't have anywhere near as impressive flowers as the giant fennel I have seen. I've been tempted to try some as it should do well in our poor sandy soil but often wondered just how tall it would get here.
