How do I know? that's why I asked for advice. And it has been good trying to find out about it. I don't think Monty Don would have given any better comments and advice. SO I have decided to keep it as it is, take off some of the hundreds of seeds, try to bring them on and see if they germinate. I will try different plantings in compost, soil, and anything else I can think of. I did manage to take off the brokeen stems which fell in the in the wind. My goodness they are strong! about 2 inches thick and pure white and woody inside. It did need a strong pair of cutters. Stems are hollw inside so I covered them with tape in case rain got in and rotted it. Thankfully 1 big stem survived so, I am leaving the whole plant to do its own thing now. Then, I will see what happens next year Whether it will be a feast or a funeral I can't depict, BUT I will post to let you all know of the fate of the FENNEL!! Thank you all so much for your comments, and Happy Gardening to you all. Hazel.
I have normal perennial fennel and it's 8ft tall at the moment but it doesn't have anywhere near as impressive flowers as the giant fennel I have seen. I've been tempted to try some as it should do well in our poor sandy soil but often wondered just how tall it would get here.
