Topping up compost

I have a few planters with flamingo trees in that I planted a few years back. As the compost has compacted a bit I just need to top it up. It currently has compost (50/50 john innes 3 and compost) and then a layer of bark chips over that. Just wondering what would be best to fill it up a bit more. Should I remove the bark and then add a 50/50 mix (like previously) to top it up and then either put the bark back or buy some new bark.

Any ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated.

I would use a soil or loam based mix, scrape back the bark, top up with the soil based mix, then put the bark back on top.
