    Privet grows fine in shade here @Wayside - large trees nearby are more likely to be depriving it of a good supply of water, which it really loves.
    We don't have that problem so it thrives everywhere.  :)
    It isn't fussy as to soil type or aspect though. It just need a decent water supply and drainage to be happy- like most shrubs or woody plants. 
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    @Fairygirl that's interesting.  Defo a very water starved area.  I'd noticed wild privet diseased in another low light, low water area.  But what didn't figure was the very tight healthy looking shrubs in full sun sitting on open chalk land.

    I read that you can use japanese privet for water remediation, drainage fields.  So figure that it likes water.  I was looking for a thirsty plant that would drink water during winter and that came up, alongside bamboos.
