Bark mulch and privet hedge?

Hi, I’m new here so I hope this isn’t a daft question.

I planted a bare root privet hedge in November last year. It’s small, but growing well and looking healthy. I have so many weeds growing in amongst the hedge plants it’s getting hard to keep on top of. I use bark mulch and cardboard in other areas of the garden and it works great, but I am worried I affect the young hedge plants if this is a no no?

Any advice is welcome!

As long as you keep the bark away from the young stems it should help to minimise your weed problem and help to keep moisture in.  Just make sure the soil is moist before you lay the mulch, ideally after some rain.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

  • That would definitely help loads. Thankyou 👍🏻
