Nepeta

bullfinchbullfinch Posts: 692
Please could someone recommend a low growing nepeta. I have a couple in the garden which I would like to replace as the flower spikes get very long and floppy. I like that they attract lots of pollinators, but they fall over everything and tbh look messy. Thank you  :)

Can you not put some supports in for what you have?

Junior Walker is quite compact.  To prevent lax growth, avoid planting in rich soil and don’t feed.  Also cutting back to ground level after the first flush of flowers starts to fade helps.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

I have Kit Kat, which is fairly short.

And also Purrsian Blue (has more of a blue rather than purple tinge)

Thank you for replying everyone. I will cut it back soon, and try to support the new growth, and if that doesn't help I will look for something shorter. I love the name purrsian blue ! 😉

I have a lot of nepeta six hills giant down the allotment and it doesn't flop much. It is a really big plant and our soil is quite poor in that area but I'm wondering if you have something squashing it for you. I can't grow any nepeta at home because it's flattened by the local cats.

The purrsian blue looks great! I've never heard of that one before, can feel a trip to the GC coming on.

Neptune is a good one. I have it front and back.

Bees love it and it’s more rigid than a lot of the others.

It’s about 30cm high and about 40 wide.

Those all look much tidier than mine. This is how they look today, sprawling all over the place. Although the flowers are finishing now, they weren't  the intense colour  you have on Neptune or Purrsian Blue. Thanks for the photos every one , I think I prefer both of those to the one I have 🙂
