Syringa mystery growth

Hello all, I'm new and my first post is a question.  I have this syringa meyeri palibin. The smaller leaves are what it looked like originally, but now it has grown this other shrub from the same stem....larger leaves and different flowers!   I have two and it's happened to both of them!  What on earth is going on and what should I do please?

I don't know but could this be a rootstock problem?

It is a dwarf hybrid, grafted onto a more vigorous rootstock.  Cut back all of the shoots with the larger leaves.  You will need to do this every year.  We have the same issue with ours.

Thanks so much.  I'll get that done.

Same with mine,  it’s grown so many shoots in the surrounding area it’s filling it’s space and more.
I’m going to hack the whole lot out.
