This is my first year to have bees.  Can someone tell me if this looks normal?

    Yes, in hot weather. They will go back in when the evening cools down. I think its called 'bearding'.

    Hi @jamesholt

    If they don't go back in then it could be because they are short of space. 
    You could add a queen excluder and a super to give them more room as your hive builds up.

    Enjoy your bees .... it's a great hobby.

    Even if it's not normal, I definitely think it looks fantastic.
