Monkey Tree with stunted growth

I put a small Monkey tree in my Mums garden 10 years ago, although it appears healthy with fresh green growth at the end of its branches it just does not grow.It has remained 2 and a half ft tall all these years. How can i help it grow to be a big strapping tree.

Just wait? We’ve been passing one of similar size in a nearby garden for quite a few years, and commented on its small size. It’s suddenly taken off over the last two years and doubled in size. Our neighbours have one they planted nearly thirty years ago as a sweet little plant. It now dwarfs their house, and they are are regretting having planted it. Maybe they take a few years to develop their root system first?

I believe they need to develop a large tap-root prior to making proper growth , then some years they thrive and in others barely grow at all ; to summarise , an erratic manner of growth .
