cordaline aus tree help please

ok question is is this tree dead or can i remove the brown leaves am a complete gardening novice the tre was already here when i moved in 7 years ago and has doubled in size would hate to lose it sorry theu are sideways cant seem to get them the right way

    They do end up with a lot of brown bits that can be cut off near the stem. The important part is the very top. Are there new leaves growing there? If so, it's fine. If the top looks dead I'd still leave it a while as it maybe have been badly affected by the wet cold winter but may soon recover. Personally I'd try and remove any dead stuff from the top to allow plenty of sun in and stop it rotting. It really is just the top central parts you need to worry about with them.
