Blackbird driving me crazy

Pete.8Pete.8 Posts: 11,340
I heard and saw  a male blackbird giving continuous distress calls about 6.30 this morning in my garden.
It's been warm so doors and windows open.
It sounds like someone running around my garden with a wheelbarrow with a squeaky wheel.
I had a 3 hour break when I went to a funeral, just got home and it's still going - without a break!
11 hours non-stop! Just going between my garden and immediate neighbours.
The poor thing now looks almost dead from exhaustion, but it's still going on full volume and non-stop.
What on earth is causing it so much distress for 11+ hours?
I do love them but honestly after 11 hours it's like torture...... it's just as well I don't have an air rifle or I'd be tempted to put it out of its misery (obviously I wouldn't)
It's the first time I can recall having headache in years.
What is his problem???

Perhaps a Jay or a squirrel or something has raided his nest … perhaps his mate has been hit by a car, or a cat has made off with a fledgling?

I'm only guessing but maybe there are fledglings that it's trying to protect from predators, the amount of time does seem excessive though. Hope for you and the blackbird it resolves itself.

It's stopped - at last - must have been my post that done it. What a blessed relief.

Yes you're right of course Dove I know there's nest in a thick conifer about 20ft from my lounge. I heard a massive kerfuffle on sat or sun.
I ran out toward the tree and 4 magpies flew out swiftly followed by 2 blackbirds in hot pursuit. Then I noticed a fledgling on the lawn which I would think could fly by the look of it. I stood by it for a few mins until the parents returned then left it.

Peace reigns once more  - bliss!! :)

I know it happens quite often sadly and the noise is annoying for 20-30 mins but then usually stops - but 11 hours.....??
At least sharing my pain seems to have remedied the situation :)

If the magpie was lurking all day then the blackbird would have kept on with his alarm call all day.

    Yes, that makes sense Dove.
There are so many magpies around here they always seem to be lurking somewhere nearby.
I know all birds have to feed their young and magpies often choose other bird's chicks, but I would rather have another blackbird than another magpie any day.

Like you @Pete.8 l have had a male blackbird doing exactly the same all day, but not non stop thankfully.
I have just stood at the front door watching him on a neighbour's roof taking on 4 young magpies. Eventually they flew off leaving him still chuntering on the roof top.
There are at least 6 young magpies around this year, for all the world like troublesome teenagers.

I have a neighbour with hens that give an alarm call for 14 hours straight whenever there is a fox around. It is grating on the ears, for sure.
