Identification and maintenance tips
Hi,
We have an increasingly large tree/plant growing just outside our front door.

I like it enormously, but I'm starting to think it's close to getting out of hand, or will be within the next 6-12 months, and am wondering about how best to cut it back. The previous home owner clearly did so, as you can see from some old branch scars.
How much should I cut this back, and where do you think the best places would be? Should I lighten it up by reducing the number of small leaf holding branches? Or do I need to get the saw out and remove the whole of the top third of the thing?

Any advice and tips very appreciated. Oh, and also - what is it?
Regards,
Andy.
