Should I cut back my Geranium?

Hi everyone,

I watched Gardeners world a couple of weeks ago and saw Monty said to cut back a Geranium Phaeum he had. We have a Geranium Phaeum Samboor and it looks like it's over. Should I cut back now?

Many thanks,

Ed

I would. I find when I cut it back it produces a new flush of leaves and sometimes even another flush of flowers. I give it a sprinkle of Fish, Blood & Bone and then a good drink after cutting back.

Yes ditto what Dove said - especially about giving it a drink.
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
  • Awesome, I will do that tomorrow. Monty said cut back to ground level so I guess I'll do that.

Thanks. I have some other Geraniums too - Geranium x Magnificum and Magnificum Blue blood. They have flowered and look like they will be over soon. Should I do the same with these or are these treated differently?

I'd do the same with your other geraniums, they'll soon bounce back!  This should help:

Geranium 'Blue Blood' • The Hardy Geranium Nursery
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

I’m doing mine now,  left it until we had some rain but they’re well and truly soaked now,  so now’s the time.

  • These are mine now. The Magnificum’s (first two photos) are still flowering (just). Should I still cut now?

I don't bother cutting down Magnificum, it doesn't flower twice. I always cut down Phaeum.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
