Tree Fern

No fronds on my tree tern yet and can’t see or feel any. Is it dead?

  • @Salsmithy Please take a picture and post it. How old is the tree fern, and is it planted into the ground or a pot (what soil in either case) ?

    I my garden.

I’ve had it about 3 years. It’s in the ground in a sheltered spot. Here’s some pics

Did you protect the crown during any freezing episodes over winter?  They can be OK for short spells down to minus 5 but are not hardy below that.  I would give the entire trunk and crown a good watering and keep them both moist to see if any new fronds appear.  You could also clear the area around the trunk and apply a thick organic mulch to help to retain moisture.  I use liquid seaweed on my tree fern once a week, poured into the crown and onto the trunk.  That might also help.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

One of ours was protected but we think that we left the cover on too long and has shown no signs of growth. However we are leaving it in the ground as you never know what might happen. Our others have all sent up lovely fronds.
We don't cut off the old fronds as this isn't done in their natural environment. The old fronds hang down and do give some insulation back to the trunk. Yes I know that some will say but it looks untidy but we don't mind. It is natural.

I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t protected it.  I read that some says it’s ok not to and it is in a sheltered spot. I’ve learnt the hard way. I have been watering/feeding recently. Keeping everything crossed. I like the idea of not cutting the fronds. Will definitely do that if I’m lucky enough to get any growth 🙏 thanks
