Clamatis Prince George am I doing it right

Hi all novice gardener here.I planted a  clamatis about six weeks ago and all was well for a few weeks but last couple of weeks some of the leaves at the bottom of the plant have started  to go brown.
Do you think it's OK or should I be feeding it more or taking of some of the buds.

It looks fine to me. They do need lots of water though and it has been very hot in most places. It can be quite dry next to a fence so make sure you give it a watering can full every day in hot weather and perhaps twice a week in cooler/rainier weather. You could carefully cut off the brown leaves if they bother you, it won't hurt the plant and if you didn't feed the clematis when you planted it, it wouldn't hurt to put a small measure of tomato fertiliser if you have some into the watering can when watering maybe once a week until it starts flowering.

    Hope it looks lovely soon.

  • Thanks lizzie27  :) when I planted it I mulched it with a good helping of mirical grow fertiliser and the soil seams to stay moist even  through the hot weather. The two big stems on the right grew really quickly then stopped  and buds started forming .
Then more spindly stems started growing with lots of tiny buds so not sure if I should cut some of the spindly stems off incase it s struggling with all the buds.

Even if the soil seems moist I would still water it … you need the water to penetrate down deep to get the roots to go down to find the cool and moisture … if the roots stay near the surface they can overheat.

  • Thanks Dove I'll  give it plenty of water then if the dry weather  comes back :).
Do you think I should feed it or will the mirical grow do it till next spring.

Clematis are nearly all hungry, thirsty plants and have thick, fleshy roots which need moisture to establish themselves and stay healthy.   Do as Lizzie suggests and give it a good, deep drink every day in hot, dry spells and a couple of times a week in cooler, damper conditions.   You need to do this for its first summer.

Come the autumn, mulch it with some proper fibrous material suc as well-rotted garden compost or a soil conditioner bought from a GC or DIY store.  It's more important to feed the soil and its micro organisms for long term fertility than to use a short term, topical chemical product like Miracle-grow.
