    Hi @theconstantgardenerinwales - I've had great success with Fresha Tank microbial disc.  Contains industrial silver.  Not cheap but should last forever.  Can be used in water butts, fish tanks, ponds and they say results should be noticed within a month.  It keeps the water clean by killing single celled organisms that come into contact with the disc so doesn't treat the sides and base of the container.  Hope that helps :)
