Pleached hornbeam

Hello,
Could someone give me some advice on some pleached hornbeam trees I planted last summer. This year most of them have thrived, However one or two have only a few leaves on them. Nowhere as much as the others. I have an irrigation system set up for 15 minutes twice a day and they are planted in clay soil. I’m worried they are dying. Does this sometimes happen in young trees? They were great through the heat last summer.
