Excessive silver birch sap

My silver birch is leaking excessive amounts of sticky sap and dropping more leaves than usual. Any suggestions why and what I can do to stop it? I wondered if it might be to do with bugs on it? Thanks.

We have the same problem. Stickiness is due to aphids but there's not much you can do about them on a tree. The stickiness should disappear if you get a good downpour but it's horrid while it lasts.
Leaves dropping is a sign of thirst as a result of present drought. If you can, give your tree 3 canfulls of water asap, then keep it well watered until we have substantial rain.
    Good luck.

Thank you very much. Hopefully rain is coming today especially as my dog is thick with sticky leaves!!! Have put hose on it to start with.
